Saponaria smut, caused by the fungus Thecaphora saponariae, is a specific systemic disease that primarily affects plants within the Caryophyllaceae family. As a member of the smut fungi group, this pathogen is characterized by its ability to replace the reproductive tissues of the host plant with its own dark, spore-filled masses.

The primary hosts for this disease include the common soapwort (Saponaria officinalis) and several species of carnations or pinks (Dianthus). The fungus targets the ovaries and developing seeds, effectively sterilizing the host plant and preventing the production of viable seeds, which significantly impacts the natural propagation of these species.

Symptoms are most evident during the blooming period. Affected flowers may appear stunted, distorted, or fail to open completely. Upon closer inspection, the seed pods or capsules, which should contain developing seeds, are instead packed with a dry, dusty, brown or black mass of fungal spores that are easily disseminated by wind or physical contact.
