Thekopsora is a genus of rust fungi that causes significant diseases in various plant species, particularly among Ericaceae (like blueberries and cranberries) and certain conifers. These fungi are obligate parasites that complete their life cycle through different stages, often requiring an alternate host, which is a classic characteristic of rust fungi in the Pucciniastraceae family.
The disease primarily targets leaves, shoots, and cones depending on the host species. In agriculture, it is of major concern for berry producers, as infection can severely weaken the plant and reduce yields. In forestry, species such as Thekopsora areolata can cause considerable damage to spruce cones, impacting seed production and forest regeneration.
Symptoms of Thekopsora infections manifest as small, yellow to orange-colored pustules, known as aecia, which typically appear on the underside of leaves or on the surface of cone scales. As the fungal spores mature, these pustules rupture, releasing a cloud of spores into the air. This process often leads to chlorosis, tissue necrosis, and premature abscission of leaves or stunted growth of infected fruits.
The spread and development of this pathogen are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Spore germination is optimized in cool, wet conditions, making spring and early summer high-risk periods. Once established, the pathogen spreads rapidly via wind and splashing water, meaning that dense or poorly ventilated plant stands are particularly vulnerable.
Management of Thekopsora involves a multifaceted approach starting with strict sanitation practices. Removing and destroying infected plant debris reduces the primary inoculum for the next season. Chemical control includes the timely application of fungicides, such as copper-based products or systemic triazoles, especially during periods of high humidity and leaf expansion. Crop management, including pruning for airflow, is essential to minimize the infection risk.
