The order Thelebolales comprises fungi that are typically found in moist environments rich in organic matter. While primarily saprotrophic, these fungi can manifest as secondary pathogens in agricultural systems, particularly when crops are under environmental stress or soil hygiene protocols are not strictly followed.
These organisms develop small, often translucent fruiting bodies (apothecia) on the substrate surface. They thrive by breaking down complex cellulose and lignin compounds. In a nursery or greenhouse environment, they can colonize the base of seedlings or potting media, competing with the plant roots for oxygen and space.
Affected crops include greenhouse-grown vegetables, ornamental plants, and seedling beds. Symptoms often include the appearance of small cup-like structures on the soil surface, surface mycelium growth, and in some cases, browning or rotting of lower stems when the fungus transitions from a saprotrophic to a opportunistic pathogenic state.
High relative humidity and poor soil aeration are the primary drivers for the proliferation of Thelebolales. They often emerge in containers with poor drainage or in fields where heavy organic mulches remain perpetually wet, creating an environment that favors their rapid spread and maturation of spores.
Integrated management is essential to prevent these fungi from impacting plant health. Key measures involve adjusting irrigation schedules to allow the soil surface to dry between watering cycles, improving greenhouse ventilation, and ensuring that any organic amendments used in the soil are fully composted to reduce the initial inoculum load.
