Thelebolus is a genus of fungi that can act as opportunistic pathogens in agricultural settings. While often found as saprotrophs on decaying organic matter, under specific environmental conditions, these fungi can infect weakened plant tissues, causing secondary infections that lead to significant crop quality degradation.

This pathogen is known to affect a variety of crops, particularly those grown in greenhouses, vegetable seedlings, and post-harvest produce. The fungus exploits physiological stress in plants, often entering through wounds or necrotic tissues, which are frequently caused by other primary pathogens or mechanical damage during handling.

The symptoms of a Thelebolus infection typically manifest as small, yellowish or brownish fruiting bodies known as apothecia appearing on the surface of the infected tissue. As the infection progresses, the plant cells break down, leading to soft rot, discoloration, and, in severe cases, the complete collapse of the plant structure.

Development and spread are highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and poor ventilation. The fungus thrives in stagnant air and moist substrates rich in organic content, making greenhouses and poorly maintained storage facilities prime environments for rapid colonization and spore dispersal.

To effectively manage and prevent outbreaks, growers should implement strict sanitation and environmental management protocols:

  • Ensure proper ventilation and air circulation to reduce surface moisture.
  • Maintain strict hygiene in greenhouses by removing all decaying organic debris.
  • Use sterilized growing media to minimize the risk of pathogen introduction.
  • Apply targeted fungicide treatments if signs of infection appear on sensitive seedlings or stored products.
