The Thelephoraceae family represents a group of basidiomycete fungi that primarily function as decomposers but can occasionally act as pathogens in agriculture and forestry. These fungi are capable of attacking the woody parts of living trees, leading to structural instability and the eventual decline of the host plant if the infection is not addressed in the early stages.
This disease mainly affects woody perennials, including fruit trees, shade trees, and various ornamental species. The infection usually gains entry through open wounds caused by pruning, storms, pest damage, or winter injury. Trees that are already stressed due to poor soil conditions or drought are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization by the fungal mycelium.
Symptoms of the disease are typically observed as the development of leathery, crust-like, or fan-shaped fruiting bodies on the trunk or branches. Internally, the fungus degrades structural components of the wood such as lignin and cellulose, causing white or brown rots. Visible signs in the canopy include stunted growth, leaf discoloration, and premature wilting of branches as the internal vascular transport system is compromised.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of Thelephoraceae include high humidity, stagnant air, and temperatures optimal for mycelial growth. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind and splashing rain, landing on susceptible bark surfaces. Once established, the mycelium can persist in the wood for years, gradually weakening the host and producing new crops of spores during favorable seasons.
Effective management and prevention strategies include maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization to improve the plant's natural defense mechanisms. Key protective measures are:
- Prompt removal and destruction of severely infected branches
- Sterilization of pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination
- Applying protective wound dressings to all major cuts and injuries
- Removing old stumps and dead debris from the orchard/forest floor
