Description

Thelohaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by microsporidians of the Thelohaniidae family. It primarily affects aquatic invertebrates, such as freshwater crayfish, and presents a significant challenge for sustainable aquaculture. The disease is characterized by the replacement of host tissues with parasite spores, leading to severe physiological dysfunction.

The causative agent is an obligate intracellular parasite that completes its life cycle within the host cells. The infectious stage, known as the spore, is highly resilient to physical and chemical stressors. This environmental persistence allows the pathogen to remain viable in the substrate and water column for extended periods, complicating eradication efforts.

The host range is predominantly limited to crustaceans. The pathogen infects the musculature and connective tissues. In farming environments, the rapid spread is facilitated by high-density stocking and the presence of infected individuals, as the parasite can be transmitted through direct contact or the consumption of infected decaying carcasses.

The clinical manifestations are distinct: the muscles of infected crustaceans turn opaque and white, often described as a porcelain-like appearance. As the infection progresses, the host exhibits reduced mobility, metabolic exhaustion, and an inevitable loss of the population. The mortality rate in infected batches can reach levels that jeopardize the entire production cycle.

Current management strategies rely heavily on biosecurity and strict hygiene protocols. Since therapeutic agents are not yet available for the effective treatment of microsporidian infections in aquaculture, prevention is key. This includes screening incoming stock, disinfecting rearing facilities, and maintaining optimal environmental parameters to minimize stress, which can suppress the immune response of the animals.
