Thelonectria coronata is a fungal pathogen that causes significant diseases in woody plants, primarily characterized by bark necrosis and canker formation. Belonging to the Ascomycota division, this fungus targets the cambium and cortical tissues of trees, disrupting the essential flow of nutrients and moisture, which eventually leads to the decline of the host plant.

The host range of Thelonectria coronata includes various deciduous tree species. The infection usually occurs through wounds caused by abiotic factors such as frost cracks, sunscald, or mechanical injuries from pruning or equipment. Once the pathogen gains entry into the woody tissue, it begins to colonize the area, leading to progressive tissue death and the development of distinct lesions.

Visible symptoms include darkening and cracking of the bark, which often develops into open or closed cankers. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of small, crown-shaped fruiting bodies (perithecia) visible on the bark surface near the site of infection. Rain and wind serve as the main vectors for spore dispersal. The pathogen is capable of overwintering as mycelium or as mature fruiting bodies within the bark, allowing it to persist in the host for several years and continuously release spores during favorable conditions.
