Thelonectria lucida is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Nectriaceae family, known to cause bark necrosis and canker diseases in various hardwood tree species. As a hemibiotrophic fungus, it exploits existing wounds or physiological weaknesses in the host plant to colonize the cortical tissues, eventually leading to the disruption of vascular functions and potential tree mortality.

This pathogen primarily targets broad-leaved trees, including species of Acer, Fagus, and Betula. It is commonly found in forest ecosystems and landscape plantings where tree stress factors, such as environmental changes or mechanical injuries, create favorable conditions for the initial fungal colonization and subsequent spread within the woody tissue.

The visual symptoms of an infection include the development of sunken cankers on the bark, which eventually lead to fissures and exposed underlying wood. During the reproductive phase of the fungus, small, orange-to-reddish perithecia appear on the surface of the infected areas. If the infection girdles the branch or trunk, the distal parts of the tree typically exhibit chlorosis, wilt, and eventual dieback.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the epidemiology of Thelonectria lucida. High humidity levels, prolonged rainfall, and mild temperatures are conducive to the release and dispersal of ascospores. The fungus frequently enters the host through frost cracks, sunscald injuries, or pruning wounds.
