Thelotremataceae is a family of crustose lichens that are often misinterpreted as plant diseases by non-specialists. Biologically, they are symbiotic associations between fungi and algae, living as epiphytes on the surface of tree bark. They do not feed on the tree's vascular system, meaning they do not act as parasites but rather use the bark as a stable habitat for growth.

These lichens commonly inhabit a variety of tree species, particularly focusing on mature trees with rough bark. In agricultural settings, they are frequently found on old apple trees, pears, and citrus trees. They are particularly prevalent in regions with high atmospheric humidity and relatively clean air, as many species within this family are sensitive to air pollution.

The visual symptoms of colonization include the appearance of crust-like patches on trunks and branches, often characterized by crater-like structures known as apothecia. The coloration ranges from white and grey to pale green. While these growths may appear unsightly, they generally do not cause necrosis or tissue death, and the underlying bark usually remains intact unless secondary pathogens exploit the moist environment underneath.

The proliferation of Thelotremataceae is driven by specific environmental conditions, primarily consistent moisture levels and low disturbance. In orchard environments, poor pruning practices that result in dense, shaded, and poorly ventilated canopies create the ideal conditions for these lichens to flourish. They are often viewed by agronomists as indicators of aging trees or neglected management practices.

The economic impact of these lichens is primarily indirect. The mass accumulation of lichen cover can harbor overwintering insect pests and potentially trap moisture that encourages the growth of actual fungal or bacterial pathogens. Preventive measures focus on good orchard hygiene: regular pruning to improve airflow, mechanical cleaning of the bark surface, and the application of lime-based washes to ensure a healthy and clean bark surface.
