Thermoactinomyces represent a genus of thermophilic, filamentous bacteria that are significant in agricultural pathology, particularly in the context of post-harvest storage. While they are not typical field pathogens attacking living plants, they cause severe degradation of stored agricultural commodities, including hay, straw, grain, and silage, by initiating and perpetuating the process of self-heating.

These bacteria primarily target stored biological materials that possess moisture levels conducive to microbial activity. Crops such as cereals, forage grasses, and oilseeds are highly susceptible to Thermoactinomyces colonization if drying processes are inadequate or storage environments are compromised by moisture accumulation.

Symptoms of colonization include a pervasive musty odor, the formation of grayish or white sporulation layers on the surface of organic matter, and significant discoloration of tissues. The metabolic activity of these bacteria generates high levels of heat, which can lead to thermal necrosis of the product, resulting in a dark, blackened appearance commonly referred to as "stack burn."

The development of these microorganisms is strictly dependent on high temperature and moisture content. They thrive in environments ranging from 45°C to 60°C. Their spores are easily dispersed by wind and handling equipment, quickly contaminating entire grain batches or haystacks if the conditions for rapid self-heating are met.

To mitigate the risks associated with Thermoactinomyces, producers should focus on stringent post-harvest management:

  • Ensuring grain and hay are dried to safe moisture levels immediately after harvest.
  • Implementing robust ventilation systems in warehouses and storage silos to dissipate heat.
  • Monitoring internal pile temperatures to detect early stages of self-heating.
  • Maintaining high standards of sanitation for all storage facilities and harvesting machinery to minimize spore load.
