Therrya is a fungal disease caused by members of the Therrya genus (most notably Therrya pini). This pathogen acts as a bark-infecting fungus that targets the branches and young stems of coniferous trees, leading to tissue necrosis and the eventual decline of the affected parts of the canopy.
The primary hosts for this fungus are various pine species, including the Scots pine. The infection typically establishes itself within the bark, where the fungus thrives by breaking down structural components of the tree's exterior, causing the blockage of sap flow and nutrient transport.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as the yellowing and subsequent browning of needles on the affected branches. As the disease progresses, distinctive fungal fruiting bodies (apothecia) emerge through the bark. These spots often develop into visible cankers or ulcers, which are reliable diagnostic signs of the presence of the pathogen.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the dissemination of the disease. High humidity and cool, wet weather facilitate the release and spread of spores via wind and rain splashes. Trees that have sustained mechanical damage are particularly susceptible, as wounds provide convenient entry points for the fungal spores.
The impact of Therrya can be significant in forest ecosystems, as it weakens the host trees, making them more susceptible to secondary infestations by bark beetles and other pests. Effective management and control strategies are essential for maintaining forest health:
