Description
Therrya needle cast is a serious fungal disease of conifers caused by the ascomycete Therrya fuckelii. This pathogen primarily affects pine species, leading to branch dieback, stem deformations, and the potential death of young trees. In forestry, it is categorized as a bark and wood necrosis disease.
The primary host is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), though other pine species may be affected. The disease is particularly damaging to young plantations aged 5 to 20 years, especially those growing in dense, poorly ventilated stands where high humidity creates optimal conditions for fungal colonization and disease spread.
Symptoms begin with the yellowing and premature shedding of needles on affected branches. Upon closer examination, the bark shows distinct longitudinal cracks and necrotic lesions. During the sporulation phase, small black fruiting bodies (apothecia) appear on the bark surface, becoming more prominent and visible after rainfall or periods of high moisture.
The development of Therrya fuckelii is driven by high humidity and moderate temperatures. Spores are dispersed by wind and rain splashes, infecting healthy trees through minor bark wounds or natural openings. The fungus survives in dead branches and fallen needles for several years, acting as a persistent source of inoculum for surrounding trees.
Management practices focus on sanitation, specifically the removal and destruction of infected wood to reduce spore density. Silvicultural measures are essential, including maintaining proper stand density to improve airflow and sunlight penetration. Chemical control is rarely practical in forestry, so prevention through site management and forest health monitoring remains the primary strategy for control.
