Thielavia species, often associated with Thielaviopsis basicola, are serious soil-borne plant pathogens. These fungi primarily attack the root systems of crops, causing significant damage by infecting the vascular tissues and preventing the efficient uptake of nutrients and moisture.
The host range of this pathogen is extensive, including major crops like cotton, tobacco, legumes, and cucurbits. In greenhouses and nurseries, it poses a severe threat to ornamental plants and vegetable seedlings, often leading to total crop loss if conditions are conducive to fungal growth.
The primary symptom of infection is the development of black root rot. The affected roots exhibit dark, blackened lesions due to the heavy production of chlamydospores by the fungus. As the infection progresses, the foliage shows signs of chlorosis, stunted growth, and wilting, eventually leading to plant death.
The development and spread of Thielavia are favored by high soil moisture, moderate temperatures, and neutral to alkaline soil pH levels. The fungus produces highly resilient chlamydospores that can persist in the soil for several years, making it an extremely persistent pathogen in infested fields.

- Managing soil pH by acidifying the growing medium.
- Improving soil drainage to prevent waterlogging.
