Description
Thielaviopsis is a genus of pathogenic soil-borne fungi responsible for various plant diseases, the most significant being black root rot, caused by the species Thielaviopsis basicola. This pathogen is known for its high resilience in the soil due to the production of robust chlamydospores, which allow the fungus to persist for several years in the absence of a host plant.
The host range of Thielaviopsis is extensive, affecting numerous agricultural and horticultural crops including cotton, tobacco, beans, soybeans, citrus, and a wide array of greenhouse-grown ornamental plants. The fungus infects the roots, colonizing the cortical tissue and causing localized or systemic necrosis, which severely impairs the plant's nutrient and water uptake capabilities.
Typical symptoms of infection include the development of characteristic dark brown to black lesions on the root system. These lesions progressively expand, leading to root decay. Above-ground symptoms are non-specific but critical for diagnostic assessment: they include stunting, chlorosis of the foliage, loss of vigor, and wilting during periods of high transpiration. Eventually, severely infected plants may completely succumb to root failure.
The development and spread of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, specifically high soil moisture and moderate temperatures, typically ranging from 15°C to 22°C. The pathogen spreads primarily through infested soil, contaminated irrigation water, and the movement of infected transplant material or gardening tools. Soil pH also plays a role, as the pathogen generally thrives better in neutral to slightly alkaline conditions.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to disease control. Key strategies include the use of disease-resistant cultivars, implementation of long-term crop rotation schemes, and ensuring proper soil drainage to prevent waterlogging. Furthermore, sanitation practices such as disinfecting tools and substrate sterilization in greenhouses are crucial. Chemical control via seed treatments or soil fungicides can be applied, but must be paired with cultural practices to minimize long-term soil inoculum levels.
