Thraustochytriaceae are a family of marine heterotrophic protists belonging to the phylum Labyrinthulomycota. While they play a significant ecological role as decomposers in marine environments, they are also recognized as serious pathogens in commercial seaweed farming, particularly affecting Porphyra and other economically important macroalgae species.

The causal agent is characterized by an amoeboid vegetative stage and the production of biflagellated zoospores. These microorganisms utilize specialized enzymes to degrade organic matter, including the cell walls of host plants. This parasitic activity allows them to penetrate plant tissue, leading to structural damage and metabolic dysfunction of the host.

Symptoms of infestation typically manifest as chlorotic lesions or bleached spots on the surface of the seaweed thallus. Over time, these spots expand, leading to tissue thinning and eventual lysis. In severe cases, the entire thallus may disintegrate, resulting in massive crop losses and a significant decline in the commercial value of the harvest.

The development and spread of Thraustochytriaceae are strongly correlated with environmental conditions. Elevated water temperatures, high biological oxygen demand, and poor water circulation are primary catalysts for outbreaks. When plants are under stress or grown at excessive densities, their resistance to these opportunistic pathogens is lowered, facilitating rapid infection spread.

Management and protection strategies focus on preventive measures and rigorous site management to minimize the risk of outbreaks:

  • Improving water circulation through adjusted planting densities and farm spacing.
  • Implementing regular health inspections to identify and remove symptomatic algae.
