Thraustochytriales are a group of unicellular, heterotrophic eukaryotes that act as significant pathogens within aquatic environments. While they are not pathogens of terrestrial crops, they represent a major challenge for the aquaculture and phycoculture industries by targeting various species of microalgae and aquatic plants.
The disease is classified as a parasitic infestation of aquatic biomass. These organisms utilize their characteristic ectoplasmic networks to penetrate cell walls, digesting the cytoplasm and ultimately leading to the lysis of the host cells, which causes severe economic loss in algae-producing facilities.
Symptomatology involves the sudden chlorosis of cultures, loss of structural integrity of plant tissues, and the appearance of fuzzy, web-like structures on the surface of host organisms under microscopic examination. The rapid disintegration of the culture is often the first visual indicator of a massive outbreak.
The development of the disease is facilitated by high culture densities, suboptimal water quality, and the accumulation of dissolved organic carbon. Warm water temperatures significantly accelerate the life cycle of the protists, allowing for rapid colonization of healthy tissues from localized infection sites.
Mitigation strategies primarily focus on stringent facility sanitation and water treatment. Effective methods include:

- UV-sterilization of incoming water lines.
- Immediate removal and disposal of infected culture batches.
- Monitoring of nutrient inputs to avoid organic waste accumulation.
