Thyridaria californica is a fungal pathogen recognized as a causal agent of grapevine trunk diseases (GTDs). This fungus specifically targets the woody tissues of the plant, leading to internal wood decay and the gradual dysfunction of the vascular system which transports water and nutrients.
The primary host for this disease is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The pathogen is notorious for its ability to persist within the permanent structure of the vine, including the trunk and cordons, eventually weakening the plant's overall structural integrity and reducing its productive lifespan.
Symptoms of an infection often go unnoticed in the early stages. However, as the fungus colonizes the wood, internal necrosis becomes severe. Affected vines may show signs of stunted shoot growth, chlorosis, and the sudden decline or death of individual cordons, often exacerbated by environmental stress or heavy crop loads.
The development and spread of Thyridaria californica are highly dependent on environmental conditions. Spores are released into the air and transmitted by wind and rain, primarily infecting the vine through pruning wounds. Once a spore enters a fresh wound, the fungus begins its colonization of the xylem, especially during periods of wet and mild weather.
Effective prevention and management rely heavily on rigorous vineyard hygiene. Pruning should be avoided during periods of high rainfall to reduce infection risks. Immediate application of protective fungicides or pruning wound sealants is essential. Furthermore, removing and destroying heavily infected wood is vital to lower the inoculum pressure within the vineyard environment.
