Thyridariaceae is a family of fungi belonging to the order Pleosporales. These fungi are known for their association with woody plants, often acting as opportunistic pathogens that thrive when the host is weakened. They primarily colonize the bark and underlying cambium tissues, leading to serious localized or systemic necrosis in affected plants.

These pathogens predominantly infect woody plant species, including various trees and shrubs found in forests and managed orchards. Vulnerability is significantly increased when the host is exposed to environmental stresses such as extreme temperature fluctuations, drought, or physical damage caused by pests and improper maintenance practices.

In terms of symptoms, infected plants typically exhibit visible fungal fruiting bodies known as ascostromata, which appear as minute, dark, erupting pustules on the bark surface. As the infection progresses, the surrounding bark tissue becomes discolored, shriveled, and often cracks, eventually leading to the death of branches or, in severe cases, the entire tree.

The development and dissemination of these fungi are closely linked to moisture levels and temperature. High humidity facilitates the production and spread of spores, which are disseminated by rain splash and wind currents. Once they settle on susceptible tissues—particularly at wound sites—they penetrate the surface and begin to colonize the host's internal structure.

Effective management and prevention strategies are essential for controlling the spread of Thyridariaceae. Key actions include consistent pruning of diseased branches, applying protective fungicides during high-risk seasons, and ensuring that trees are kept in a vigorous, well-nourished state. By reducing physical damage to trunks and branches, farmers can significantly limit the entry points available to the fungus.
