Description
Thyrostroma canker is a serious fungal disease caused by the pathogen Thyrostroma compactum. It manifests as a destructive necrosis of the bark and cambium layers of deciduous trees. If left unmanaged, the infection systematically degrades the tree's vascular system, eventually leading to the death of branches or the entire specimen.
The primary host for this pathogen is the linden tree (Tilia spp.). The disease is particularly prevalent in urban landscapes and nursery environments where trees are subjected to environmental stress. The fungus enters the host primarily through entry points such as frost cracks, pruning wounds, sunscald injuries, or mechanical damage caused by maintenance equipment.
The clinical signs of the infection include the formation of distinct, depressed necrotic lesions on the bark. As the disease progresses, the fungus produces small, black, cushion-like stromata on the surface of the affected bark. These lesions eventually cause the bark to crack, peel, and slough off, exposing the underlying wood to further decay and pathogen invasion.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of the disease. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air within dense canopies facilitate the production and dissemination of fungal conidia. Once established, the fungus remains active throughout the dormant season within the bark, allowing it to quickly resume colonization and spreading as soon as temperatures rise in the spring.
