Thysanophorosis is a fungal plant disease caused by microorganisms of the Thysanophora genus. These fungi act as opportunistic pathogens that predominantly attack weakened plants, stored seeds, or decaying organic matter, leading to significant physiological degradation of tissues.

The host range of Thysanophora includes various grain crops, oilseeds, and vegetables kept in storage. The fungus is particularly dangerous for germinating seeds, as it colonizes the seed coat and embryo, preventing healthy emergence and often causing damping-off of seedlings in the field.

Key symptoms of the disease include the appearance of a velvet-like coating on the affected plant parts. This fungal growth is usually grayish or brown. As the infection progresses, the tissues become necrotic, discolored, and soft, leading to structural collapse of the leaves, stems, or fruits depending on the crop species.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity (above 80%) and moderate temperatures. The fungus spreads rapidly through wind-dispersed spores and contaminated gardening tools, allowing it to persist in soil and agricultural residues during off-seasons.

Managing Thysanophorosis requires an integrated approach. Effective strategies include improving storage aeration to reduce humidity, regular disinfection of tools and storage facilities, and treating seeds with systemic fungicides before planting. Maintaining soil health and avoiding over-densification of crops can further mitigate the risk of severe outbreaks.
