Description

The causal agent of kernel smut in rice is the fungus Tilletia barclayana (often cited as Neovossia barclayana). This pathogen belongs to the bunt fungi group and is specifically adapted to infect the floral parts of the rice plant.

The primary host for this fungus is rice (Oryza sativa). The disease affects individual grains within the panicle, where the infection develops during the grain-filling stage, eventually replacing the starchy endosperm with a mass of fungal spores.

Visual symptoms usually appear when the rice panicles reach maturity. The glumes of affected grains may slightly open or split, revealing a dark brown to black powdery mass of spores that can easily be dispersed by wind or physical contact during harvesting.

Disease development is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly during the flowering stage. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures are critical, as they promote the germination of teliospores and facilitate the infection of the ovary through the floral structures.

The economic impact of Tilletia barclayana is significant. Beyond the direct loss of grain yield, the presence of smut spores contaminates the harvested lot, imparting a strong odor and discoloration, which significantly lowers the market grade and processing quality of the rice grain.
