This pathogen is a highly specialized parasite that infects the reproductive organs of host plants, leading to the destruction of the ovary and its replacement with a mass of fungal teliospores.

The primary hosts of this fungus are various grass species, particularly those in the genus Agrostis (bentgrass). These grasses serve as natural reservoirs for the pathogen, allowing it to persist in the environment and potentially affect related agricultural cereal crops under favorable conditions.

The characteristic symptoms of infection involve the transformation of kernels into dark, smutted sori. These infected structures, often referred to as smut balls, replace the healthy grain. As the plant matures, the glumes may separate, exposing the mass of black, powdery spores that are easily dispersed by environmental factors.

Disease development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically moisture levels and temperatures during the anthesis (flowering) period. The spores are typically windborne or spread through rain splashes, landing on the receptive stigmas of the host flowers to initiate the systemic infection process.

The economic impact of the disease is associated with significant yield loss and contamination of grain lots. Management strategies include the use of certified pathogen-free seeds, strict adherence to crop rotation practices, and the application of systemic fungicides to protect crops during the critical flowering stage.
