Patagonian bunt, caused by the fungus Tilletia patagonica, is a specialized fungal disease affecting various grass species. This pathogen is a basidiomycete that specifically targets the inflorescences of its hosts, causing significant physiological disruption and economic loss in susceptible cereal crops.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include species of Bromus and specific wheat varieties. As an obligate parasite, the fungus relies on the host's development cycle to complete its own life cycle, with the infection usually initiating during the seed germination phase or early seedling development.
Symptoms become apparent during the heading stage of the crop. Infected ovaries are replaced by masses of black, teliospores contained within a thin, fragile pericarp. These "bunt balls" are often darker and more swollen than healthy grains. When these structures burst, they release clouds of spores, contaminating equipment, soil, and neighboring grain.
The environmental requirements for the development of Tilletia patagonica include cool, moist conditions during the seed germination period. These conditions allow the fungus to infect the seedling before it reaches the surface. Once established, the pathogen can persist in the soil for several seasons, creating a continuous risk for future plantings.
Management strategies focus on preventing the spread of the pathogen. Seed cleaning and the use of certified, disease-free seed are essential. Fungicidal seed treatments are the most effective chemical measure for controlling seed-borne inoculum. Furthermore, implementing rigorous crop rotation programs and effective tillage practices helps manage the soil-borne spore load, reducing the prevalence of the disease.
