Description
The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Tilletia secalis, a basidiomycete that induces systemic infection in rye crops. Unlike other smut diseases that specifically target the grain head, this pathogen colonizes the entire stem structure, significantly disrupting the plant's metabolic and reproductive functions.
The primary host for this fungus is winter rye. Infection typically occurs during the seedling stage, specifically from germination until the plant emerges from the soil. The fungus invades the coleoptile and grows systematically within the plant tissue, eventually replacing healthy internal cells with masses of dark teliospores.
Visual symptoms include stunted growth, shortened internodes, and significant thickening and brittleness of the stems. Infected plants often fail to produce a viable head, or the heads become completely filled with black, powdery spore masses that burst through the plant's epidermis, facilitating further contamination of soil and equipment.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease development. Tilletia secalis thrives in cool, moist soil conditions during the planting season. Soil temperatures between 5°C and 15°C are optimal for the germination of teliospores and subsequent infection of the young, vulnerable plant shoots.
Effective management strategies require a combination of preventative measures. Farmers should prioritize the use of systemic fungicides for seed treatment to eliminate both soil-borne and seed-borne inoculum. Additionally, crop rotation, selecting certified smut-free seed lots, and ensuring optimal planting depths are essential practices to minimize the impact of this pathogen on total yield.
