Description

The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Tilletia setariae, a basidiomycete that specifically targets grass species within the Setaria genus. This obligate parasite is widely recognized for its impact on foxtail grasses, often affecting both wild populations and cultivated varieties used for fodder or ornamental purposes.

The primary symptom of the disease is the transformation of the seeds into smut sori. Instead of healthy grains, the spikelets become filled with a dark, powdery mass of fungal teliospores. These sori are often slightly swollen and may cause the entire inflorescence to appear stunted or distorted compared to healthy plants.

Development of the disease is heavily dependent on environmental conditions during the germination stage. The fungus infects the host plant at the seedling stage. Moist, cool soil conditions during the early growth phases significantly promote the germination of teliospores and the successful colonization of the host plant's apical meristem.

The pathogenicity of Tilletia setariae causes significant crop loss by reducing the seed yield and quality. Infected plants provide little to no value for grain harvesting, and the presence of spores can contaminate storage facilities and agricultural machinery, potentially spreading the disease to subsequent crop cycles.

Effective management strategies rely on preventing the initial infection and reducing the spore load in the field:

  • Selection of certified, smut-free seeds for planting.
  • Treatment of seeds with systemic fungicides to protect seedlings during germination.
  • Implementation of crop rotation to break the survival cycle of the soil-borne spores.
  • Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infected crop residues.
  • Control of wild Setaria weeds in and around the fields to eliminate pathogen reservoirs.
