The fungus Tilletia vankyi is the primary causal agent of sedge smut, a disease specifically targeting members of the Cyperaceae family, particularly the genus Carex. As an obligate parasite, it disrupts the reproductive cycle of the host plant by colonizing its floral tissues during the developmental stage of the inflorescence.
The characteristic symptoms of this infection involve the hypertrophy and deformation of the sedge spikes. As the fungus matures internally, it converts the healthy reproductive organs into a dense mass of teliospores. Eventually, the spikes rupture, releasing dark, dusty spore masses that are spread by wind, irrigation, or contact with neighboring healthy plants.
Development and spread are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures often found in marshy or meadow habitats. The spores exhibit significant longevity, remaining viable in the soil or on decaying organic matter for several seasons, ensuring a persistent infection cycle when the host plants reappear in the following year.
The primary economic and ecological impact of Tilletia vankyi is the sterilization of affected plants. By replacing seed production with spore development, the fungus prevents the natural regeneration of the sedge population. In managed landscapes or ornamental gardens, this results in significant aesthetic damage and a decrease in the overall density of the plant coverage.
