Tilletia walkeri is a pathogenic fungus responsible for the disease known as ryegrass bunt. It is a basidiomycete that specifically targets the ovaries of ryegrass (Lolium) species, effectively replacing healthy seeds with a dense mass of black, microscopic spores.

The host range is primarily focused on Lolium species, including Italian ryegrass and perennial ryegrass. As an obligate parasite, the fungus depends entirely on the host plant to complete its biological cycle, making it a significant concern for grass seed producers worldwide.

Symptoms become most apparent at the seed-filling stage. While the vegetative growth of the plant might look normal, the infected spikelets contain smut balls instead of grain. These sori are often hidden within the glumes, making them difficult to detect during standard field inspections until the husks break and release the spore dust.

The spread of the pathogen is facilitated by contaminated seeds and wind-blown spores that remain viable in the soil. Moist environmental conditions during the anthesis stage of the host plant are critical for the successful infection of the floral parts by the germinating spores.

Control measures are centered on prevention and sanitation. Key strategies include:

  • Sourcing certified disease-free seeds for planting.
  • Applying systemic fungicides as seed treatments.
  • Implementing rigorous crop rotation to minimize soil-borne inoculum.
