While traditionally identified as an epiphyte or a hyperparasite on powdery mildew, it can manifest as a primary pathogen under specific environmental conditions, causing distinct necrotic lesions and discoloration on various host plants.
The causal agent is the fungal species Tilletiopsis albescens. It spreads primarily through airborne spores, colonizing the phyllosphere. Once established, the fungus interacts with the host's surface, extracting nutrients and, in higher concentrations, invading the epidermal tissue, which interferes with the plant's normal physiological functions.
The fungus primarily impacts vegetable and berry crops, particularly in protected environments such as greenhouses. Crops like cucumbers, strawberries, and various leafy greens are known hosts.
