While these fungi are typically known as desert truffles, their interaction with the rhizosphere can sometimes shift from symbiotic to parasitic, causing damage to the host plant's root system.

The causal agent is the fungal genus Tirmania, which thrives in arid environments. The disease mechanism involves the colonization of plant roots by the fungus. When the environmental conditions are unbalanced, the excessive growth of fungal mycelia interferes with the plant’s ability to intake essential nutrients and water, leading to physiological stress.
