Tolyposporium smut is a fungal disease caused by pathogens of the genus Tolyposporium, which belongs to the smut fungi group. This pathogen primarily targets members of the Poaceae family, with a significant impact on sorghum crops. The disease is known for its ability to destroy the grain, drastically reducing the yield of both grain and forage sorghum.

The infection process typically begins when spores land on the flowers of the host plant during the anthesis stage. Once infected, the fungus grows internally, replacing the developing ovaries with dense masses of fungal spores. This process effectively sterilizes the plant part, preventing the formation of viable seeds and replacing them with fungal structures.

Symptoms are most evident during the grain-filling stage. Infected kernels develop into large, distorted galls that are often covered by a thin membrane. Upon maturity, this membrane ruptures, releasing a black, powdery mass of teliospores into the field. This mass is easily dispersed by wind, water, and mechanical harvesting equipment, facilitating the spread of the disease to neighboring plants.

The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature during the flowering stage. High moisture levels significantly promote spore germination and subsequent infection. Furthermore, the longevity of these spores in the soil allows the pathogen to persist across seasons, making it a recurring threat in fields where host crops are continuously cultivated.

Management strategies must focus on a multi-faceted approach to reduce the inoculum load. Key practices include the use of disease-free, fungicide-treated seeds, and the selection of resistant varieties whenever available. Additionally, crop rotation remains a crucial tool, as it helps break the pathogen's life cycle. Deep tillage can also assist in burying infected plant debris, which helps minimize the amount of spores available for future infections.
