Tomentella ferruginea is a basidiomycete fungus known to act as a soil-borne pathogen in various forestry and nursery settings. While it primarily functions as a saprotroph breaking down organic matter, it exhibits pathogenic behavior when conditions favor its spread, specifically affecting the roots and root collars of young saplings.

The host range of this disease primarily includes coniferous and broad-leaved tree seedlings. The pathogen is particularly problematic in damp, shaded environments where the fungal mycelium can easily establish contact with the host tissue. Its ability to survive on decaying organic debris allows it to persist in the soil for extended periods.

Key symptoms of an infection include a distinct rusty-brown or orange fungal mat or crust appearing at the base of the stem near the soil line. Infected plants often show signs of chlorosis, reduced vigor, and stunted growth.
