Description

Torula mold is a fungal infection caused by species of the genus Torula. As an opportunistic pathogen, this fungus often colonizes plants that have been weakened by environmental stress, mechanical injury, or existing infections, leading to the development of characteristic dark, velvety growth on affected tissues.

The pathogen reproduces via conidia, which are easily disseminated by air currents, water splashes, and physical contact. These spores are highly resilient and can persist on crop debris, soil, and within storage facilities, making them a constant threat to various agricultural and horticultural crops under favorable conditions.

A wide range of crops is susceptible, including small grains, fruits, and vegetables. Torula is particularly problematic in scenarios where humidity is consistently high and ventilation is poor, which triggers rapid sporulation and colonization of leaves, stems, and stored produce.

Symptoms of the disease manifest as patches of olive-black or dark-brown mold. This growth disrupts the plant's physiological functions, leading to chlorosis, tissue necrosis, and in the case of harvested goods, rapid decomposition and rot that renders the product unsalable.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Primary control strategies focus on sanitation, such as the removal of infected plant residues and the sterilization of storage containers. In the field, providing adequate airflow and applying appropriate fungicides can significantly reduce the impact of the disease.
