An important clarification for agronomists: the term Toxoplasma (Toxoplasma gondii) is not related to plant diseases. It is an obligate intracellular parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, affecting only mammals and birds, and is considered a dangerous zoonotic disease. The classification of this microorganism as a plant pathogen is a common misconception, as it poses no direct threat to crop production or plant physiology.
The disease is caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Its life cycle is closely linked to members of the Felidae family, which are the definitive hosts. Almost all warm-blooded animals, including livestock such as sheep, goats, pigs, and cattle, can serve as intermediate hosts for the parasite.
In agricultural settings, the harmful impact of toxoplasmosis is primarily seen in reproductive losses. Affected livestock may experience miscarriages, the birth of non-viable offspring, stillbirths, and a general decline in the immune status of the herd. This results in direct economic losses for livestock farms.
The spread of the pathogen is associated with the presence of cats on farms and feed storage areas. The parasite's oocysts are shed in cat feces and can persist in soil, bedding, water, and feed for long periods, showing high resistance to various environmental factors.
Protection and prevention measures rely on strict veterinary and sanitary control. Key methods include:
- Preventing cat access to feed storage areas and livestock grazing pastures.
- Maintaining strict hygiene protocols when handling animals.
- Regular rodent control, as rodents act as intermediate vectors in the transmission chain.
- Implementation of quarantine measures for new animals arriving at the farm.
