Description
An important agronomic clarification: Toxoplasma gondii is not a plant pathogen. It is an obligate intracellular parasite, a protozoan of the phylum Apicomplexa, that affects mammals and birds as a zoonotic agent. In agricultural practice, this organism is considered within the context of farm sanitation and livestock management rather than as a phytopathogen affecting crops.
The biology of the parasite is complex and involves intermediate and definitive hosts. Intermediate hosts include almost all warm-blooded animals, including humans and livestock. The definitive host, where the parasite undergoes sexual reproduction, consists of members of the Felidae family. Oocysts are shed in the feces of cats and can persist in soil or water, creating a contamination risk for livestock.
In crop production, Toxoplasma gondii does not cause symptoms, tissue necrosis, decay, or chlorosis in cultivated plants. The nutrition mechanisms of this organism are strictly adapted to animal cells. Therefore, for fields, orchards, and greenhouses, the parasite poses no direct phytosanitary threat, does not reduce crop yields, and is not a target for agrotechnical plant protection programs.
The primary risk of this organism in the agricultural sector lies in the potential contamination of feed, pastures, or harvested produce (vegetables, berries) by oocysts from the environment. This creates a risk for livestock and field workers. Prevention focuses on maintaining zoohygienic standards, controlling rodent populations, which can serve as intermediate carriers, and managing animal access to feed storage facilities.
Protection measures are exclusively sanitary and hygienic in nature. To prevent the spread of oocysts on farms, it is recommended to implement the following:
- Restrict access of stray cats to grain and fodder storage areas.
- Implement regular rodent control (deratization) to prevent transmission via pests.
- Ensure thorough washing or heat treatment of produce and maintain personal hygiene protocols for staff.
- Perform veterinary laboratory screening if livestock infection is suspected.
