Trabutia is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Phyllachorales, which acts as a plant pathogen causing various types of leaf spot diseases. This condition is primarily characterized by the formation of black, stromatic fungal fruiting bodies on the surface of host leaves.
The disease is caused by ascomycete fungi that invade the epidermal layers of the leaf. These pathogens create distinct black, glossy, and slightly raised spots where the fungus completes its life cycle. By invading the leaf tissue, the parasite diverts nutrients, resulting in stunted growth of the host plant.
The primary hosts for Trabutia infections are various species of the Ficus genus. These plants often experience significant aesthetic and physiological damage when infected, particularly in greenhouse environments or nursery settings where humidity is elevated and airflow is restricted.
Key symptoms include the emergence of small black spots on leaves, which often appear in clusters. As the fungal colonies grow, the surrounding plant tissue may begin to chlorose or develop necrotic spots. The most severe consequence of a heavy infection is premature senescence and defoliation of the plant.
The spread of this disease is highly correlated with wet weather and high humidity, which facilitate the dispersal of spores via splashing rain and wind currents. Effective management strategies involve comprehensive hygiene, such as removing infected leaves immediately and ensuring proper air circulation within the plant canopy to lower ambient moisture levels.
