Trachysphaera is a genus of fungi that functions as a soil-borne pathogen, often causing severe damage to the root systems and the basal stems of various agricultural and ornamental crops. The primary pathogen consists of microscopic fungi capable of persisting in the soil substrate for extended periods, transitioning into a parasitic state when environmental conditions become favorable.

This pathogen mainly affects vegetable crops, berry bushes, and flowering plants. Seedlings and young plants are particularly vulnerable, as their root systems are still developing and lack the sufficient resilience to resist mycelial penetration directly from the surrounding soil.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as root rot, the emergence of dark, sunken spots on the stems, general stunted growth, and progressive wilting. Leaves begin to chlorose and eventually die; as the disease progresses, the root system is decimated, leading to the total collapse of the infected plant.

The development of Trachysphaera is heavily influenced by high soil moisture, poor drainage, and lack of proper soil aeration. The spread of the fungus is also exacerbated by inadequate crop rotation, which allows the pathogen population to build up in the soil over several growing seasons.

To effectively prevent and control the spread of this disease, agronomic practices are essential. Key measures include:

  • sterilizing growing media and greenhouse surfaces;
  • maintaining strict irrigation management to prevent waterlogging;
  • regular monitoring and immediate removal of symptomatic plants;
