Trametes is a genus of wood-decaying fungi within the Polyporaceae family, recognized as significant pathogens that cause white rot in both living and dead wood. These fungi degrade lignin and cellulose, leading to a structural loss of mechanical strength in the infected woody host.
The host range of Trametes is broad, affecting a variety of hardwoods and, less frequently, softwoods. In agricultural settings, it commonly attacks fruit trees, particularly those that are older, stressed, or neglected. The fungus typically enters the host through open wounds, pruning cuts, or damage caused by environmental factors.
Field symptoms are primarily identified by the presence of bracket-shaped or shelf-like fruiting bodies (basidiocarps) growing on the trunks or limbs. These bodies are often tough, leathery, and display distinct concentric color zones. Internally, the infected wood becomes bleached, fibrous, and fragile as the fungal mycelium consumes the cellular matrix.
Development and spread are facilitated by environmental moisture and the availability of colonization sites. Spores are released from the fruiting bodies and dispersed by wind or insects, landing on exposed wood surfaces. Conditions such as high humidity, warm temperatures, and poor air circulation within the tree canopy favor the rapid progression of the infection.
