Description
Trametes cervina, commonly known as the deer-colored bracket, is a wood-decay fungus within the Polyporaceae family. It acts primarily as a saprotroph, but can function as a facultative parasite that causes white rot in various woody plants, leading to the gradual degradation of the host's internal structure.
This fungus typically colonizes deciduous species, including oak, beech, and various fruit-bearing orchard trees. Infection generally occurs through points of entry such as pruning wounds, broken branches, or insect-bored holes, where environmental conditions allow the spores to germinate and establish a feeding mycelium.
The primary symptom of an active infection is the appearance of flat, yellowish-brown fruiting bodies on the trunk or large branches. Internally, the wood loses its tensile strength, becomes spongy, and develops a fibrous, bleached appearance as the fungus breaks down the lignin and cellulose within the host plant's tissues.
High humidity levels and mild temperatures provide the most favorable environment for the growth and reproduction of this pathogen. The fungus thrives in shaded areas with poor air circulation, which helps maintain the moisture required for the fungal colonization to progress deeper into the heartwood of the tree.
Preventative measures are essential to mitigate the impact of the disease. Gardeners should practice proper sanitation by removing and destroying heavily infected wood, using sharp tools for pruning, and applying sealant to large cuts.
