Trametes corrugata is a species of bracket fungus that acts as a significant pathogen causing white rot in various hardwood species. As a wood-decay fungus, it thrives on decaying organic matter but can effectively colonize and parasitize weakened, stressed, or injured trees, progressively compromising their structural integrity and long-term vitality.
This pathogen affects a broad spectrum of deciduous trees, ranging from orchard crops to native forest species. It is particularly opportunistic, targeting trees with pre-existing damage such as frost cracks, sunscald, improper pruning wounds, or areas weakened by insect infestations, which provide easy access points for mycelial penetration into the sapwood.
The primary symptom of infection is the emergence of leathery, bracket-shaped fruit bodies on the exterior of the bark. These sporocarps are easily identified by their wrinkled, concentrically zoned surface. Inside the tree, the fungal activity manifests as white rot, where the fungus enzymatically degrades lignin and cellulose, turning the internal woody tissues into a pale, fibrous, and fragile mass that eventually loses all mechanical strength.
Environmental factors play a crucial role in the development and dispersal of the fungus. Trametes corrugata relies on wind-dispersed spores to colonize new hosts. High humidity, mild temperatures, and poor ventilation within the canopy or orchard create ideal conditions for spore germination. Once established, the mycelium spreads internally, often going unnoticed until the appearance of external fruiting bodies indicates significant internal damage.
Management and prevention require a proactive approach to tree health. Effective protection measures include:
- Regular sanitation pruning to remove infected branches.
- Thorough cleaning and sealing of all trunk or branch wounds.
- Application of protective fungicides on fresh cuts.
- Maintaining optimal tree vigor through balanced nutrition and irrigation.
- Removing and destroying infested wood to minimize the local spore load.
