Lumpy bracket (Latin: Trametes gibbosa) is a wood-decaying fungus that acts as a pathogen in various deciduous tree species. Within the context of plant pathology, it is primarily recognized for causing white rot, which leads to the structural degradation of the host's woody tissues.
The host range is extensive, primarily targeting species such as beech, birch, hornbeam, oak, and linden. While it acts mostly as a saprotroph feeding on dead wood, it can opportunistically invade weakened or wounded standing trees, significantly accelerating the process of decay and structural instability in forest stands and orchards.
The primary diagnostic sign of this fungus is the presence of pilei (fruiting bodies) that emerge from the bark. These are typically semi-circular, whitish to light grey in color, and feature a characteristic hump near the point of attachment. Internally, the wood becomes fibrous, brittle, and takes on a bleached, pale appearance.
The development and spread of Trametes gibbosa are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and stable temperatures. Spores are released from the pores of the fruiting bodies and spread via air currents, infecting the host through bark wounds, pruning cuts, or dead branches.
Effective management strategies center on sanitation and tree maintenance. Key practices include:

- Pruning and removing heavily infected branches or trees to reduce inoculum pressure.
- Applying protective wound sealants to cuts to prevent fungal entry.
