The Scented polypore (Trametes suaveolens) is a wood-decay fungus responsible for causing white heart rot in living trees and decaying wood. As a forest pathogen, it is particularly noted for its ability to target specific deciduous trees, leading to structural instability and the gradual decline of the host plant.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are members of the Salicaceae family, specifically willow (Salix) and poplar (Populus) species. The fungus typically gains entry into the host through wounds, broken branches, frost cracks, or sites previously colonized by boring insects, where it begins the process of degrading lignin and cellulose.
Symptoms of the disease are marked by the appearance of perennial fruiting bodies on the trunk. These brackets are often hoof-shaped, with a pale upper surface. A definitive feature of this species is the distinct, pleasant anise-like or sweet fruity odor emitted by fresh basidiocarps, which helps distinguish it from other wood-inhabiting polypores.
The development of the fungus is favored by high humidity and the presence of unprotected wounds on the bark. Basidiospores are wind-dispersed and land on susceptible tree parts; if the environmental conditions are moist, they germinate and colonize the internal xylem, establishing a persistent mycelial network that slowly destroys the wood structure.
