In agricultural and forestry contexts, it is classified as a pathogen responsible for white rot. This fungus acts as both a weak parasite on stressed trees and a saprotroph on dead or decaying woody substrates, effectively breaking down lignin and cellulose components of the wood.

The fungus typically colonizes deciduous trees, including poplar, willow, and various fruit trees that have been weakened by environmental stressors or poor management. It enters the host plant through wounds, pruning cuts, or bark fissures, where the natural physical barrier has been breached, providing a gateway for the mycelium to establish itself within the heartwood.

Key symptoms include the appearance of annual or perennial fruiting bodies on the bark of infected trees. These conks are typically sessile, imbricate, and have a distinct hairy surface with a whitish, yellowish, or ochre coloration. Internally, the wood undergoes structural degradation, becoming bleached and spongy, which significantly compromises the structural integrity of the tree and increases the risk of limb failure.

The spread and development of Trametes trogii are heavily influenced by ambient humidity levels and temperature. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind and splashing rain, landing on susceptible sites such as unprotected wood surfaces. Once established, the mycelial network spreads slowly but continuously through the wood tissue, gradually exhausting the nutrient reserves and structural strength of the tree.
