Description

Tranzschelia is a genus of rust fungi (order Pucciniales) that includes significant plant pathogens. The species Tranzschelia pruni-spinosae is particularly notorious for causing rust disease on various stone fruit trees, acting as an obligate biotroph that derives nutrients from the living tissues of its host plants.

The primary hosts of this fungus include economically important species within the Prunus genus, such as plums, apricots, peaches, and cherries. The disease is distributed globally, particularly in regions with temperate climates, where it can cause severe economic losses by reducing both yield and tree vigor.

Symptoms are most visible on the leaves. Initial signs include small, chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface. Correspondingly, on the underside of the leaves, reddish-brown pustules known as uredinia develop. As the season progresses, these pustules release spores and may turn dark brown or black, representing the development of teliospores, which are the survival structures of the fungus.

The development and spread of Tranzschelia are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly leaf wetness duration and moderate temperatures. Wind and rain splash are the main mechanisms for spreading urediniospores throughout the orchard. The fungus overwinters primarily in the form of teliospores on fallen infected leaves, which remain viable until the following spring.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to break the disease cycle. Crucial preventive practices include the removal and destruction of leaf litter, which reduces the primary inoculum source. In commercial orchards, fungicide application is often necessary; protective sprays (including copper-based compounds) and curative treatments with triazoles are effective if applied according to local phenological monitoring.
