Description
Plum rust is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Tranzschelia pruni-spinosae. It is a heteroecious rust fungus, meaning it requires two unrelated host plants, typically species of Prunus and Anemone, to complete its complex biological life cycle.
The disease primarily affects stone fruit trees, including plums, apricots, peaches, and nectarines. High humidity and moderate temperatures are critical factors that promote spore germination and the rapid secondary spread of the infection throughout the orchard during the summer months.
Symptoms are distinct: initially, small pale spots appear on the upper leaf surface, followed by the development of powdery, rust-colored pustules on the underside of the leaves. In severe cases, infected leaves turn yellow or brown and drop prematurely, causing early defoliation.
The economic impact is substantial, as premature leaf loss significantly reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity. This leads to weakened tree vigor, reduced cold tolerance during winter, and a consistent decline in fruit quality and yield over subsequent harvests.
Effective management requires an integrated strategy, starting with strict orchard sanitation, such as removing and burying fallen leaves to eliminate the overwintering inoculum. During the growing season, timely applications of copper-based or systemic fungicides are essential to protect healthy foliage.
