Trechispora (Latin: Trechispora) is a genus of basidiomycetous fungi that can act as pathogens affecting various agricultural crops. These fungi are primarily known for causing root decay and soft rot in tubers and roots, often appearing as opportunistic invaders in conditions that are stressful for the host plant.
The causal agent thrives in the soil, utilizing organic matter and plant debris as a primary substrate. As a facultative parasite, the fungus can survive in the soil for extended periods, making it a persistent threat in fields where moisture management is neglected or where crop rotation practices are not strictly followed.
Symptoms of an infestation typically include the development of a white or grayish fungal film on the roots or tubers, followed by rapid tissue softening. The destruction of the vascular system prevents the uptake of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to stunted growth, yellowing of leaves, and premature wilting of the plant canopy.
