While it typically colonizes decaying woody debris, under certain environmental stress factors, it can act as an opportunistic pathogen, affecting the structural integrity of weakened trees and woody shrubs in forest or nursery environments.
The host range of Trechispora cohaerens includes various coniferous and deciduous species. It is most commonly found on dead wood, logs, and stumps, but it poses a risk to live plants that suffer from physiological stress, root damage, or bark wounds. Once the fungus establishes itself within the vascular system or heartwood, it initiates the enzymatic degradation of lignin and cellulose.

The fungal spores are primarily dispersed by wind and splashing rainwater, settling on vulnerable points such as pruning cuts or areas damaged by insects and machinery.
Damage management focuses on strict sanitation and preventive maintenance. Removing diseased wood and clearing forest debris are critical to reducing the spore load in the environment. Ensuring that trees remain vigorous through proper soil management and protecting them from mechanical injuries can significantly minimize the risk of infection. In cases of significant infestation, prompt removal of affected material is recommended to preserve the overall health of the ecosystem.
