Trechispora mollusca is a basidiomycete fungus recognized primarily as a wood-decay agent. While often found on decaying logs, in agricultural and silvicultural settings, it can act as a opportunistic pathogen affecting the health of weakened woody plants, leading to significant structural degradation.
The fungus functions as an agent of white rot, decomposing lignin and cellulose within the host tissue. Its biological profile includes the production of thin, membrane-like basidiocarps that spread across the surface of the infected substrate, allowing the fungus to expand its colonization area rapidly when environmental conditions are optimal.
This pathogen targets a variety of woody species, including conifers and broadleaf trees. Host susceptibility increases significantly when trees have pre-existing physical injuries, are subject to chronic waterlogging, or are growing in environments with poor air circulation, which prevents the bark and surrounding soil from drying out.
Key symptoms include the presence of white, web-like mycelium on the surface of the bark or root collar. Internally, the wood becomes soft, spongy, and brittle as the fungal enzymes digest the structural matrix. Visible decline of the plant, such as leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, or sudden branch dieback, often indicates an advanced state of the infection.

It is vital to remove and destroy heavily infected plant debris to reduce the spore load in the immediate area.
