Trechispora praefocata is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the order Polyporales (specifically the Trechisporaceae family). It is recognized in agronomy as a fungus capable of forming distinct, thin, web-like to crustose basidiocarps that envelop the stems and leaves of its host plants, often leading to significant physiological stress and tissue decline.

This pathogen typically affects a range of herbaceous plants, including various grasses and ornamental species. Its host range is primarily dictated by the availability of high-humidity microenvironments. When environmental conditions are optimal, the fungus can rapidly colonize plant surfaces, often starting from the base of the stem near the soil line.

The symptoms of infection typically include the appearance of a white or cream-colored mycelial mat. As the name suggests, the pathogen effectively "chokes" the plant by wrapping around stems, which inhibits transpiration and gas exchange.
