Trechispora stellulata is a basidiomycetous fungus often identified in agronomy as a soil-borne pathogen associated with root rot complexes. While primarily a saprotroph that decomposes organic matter, it can exhibit opportunistic pathogenic behavior, particularly in weakened plants or those grown under unfavorable soil conditions.
This fungus typically impacts cereals and greenhouse-grown vegetables. It colonizes the rhizosphere, targeting the root system and the stem base. By disrupting the normal function of the root hairs, the pathogen limits the plant's ability to uptake water and essential minerals, directly affecting yield and plant vigor.
Symptoms of an infection include stunted growth, chlorosis, and general wilting. Close inspection of the root collar and soil surface around the stem often reveals a fine, whitish, web-like mycelium. If the environmental conditions remain favorable for the fungus, the decay of the stem base can lead to lodging and premature death of the plants.
The development of Trechispora stellulata is strongly correlated with excessive soil moisture and poor drainage. The pathogen thrives in compacted soils where oxygen levels are low and humidity is constantly high. In such conditions, the fungal mycelium can spread rapidly, facilitated by the movement of soil water and the contact between root systems.
Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Optimizing soil structure and drainage to prevent waterlogging.
- Implementing crop rotation to decrease soil pathogen inoculum pressure.
- Using appropriate seed treatments that protect against fungal root infections.
- Utilizing bio-control agents, such as Trichoderma species, which compete with and suppress the growth of Trechispora mycelium in the rhizosphere.
