Description

Trechisporales is an order of basidiomycete fungi that includes various species affecting plant health. While many members of this order are saprotrophs, certain types act as pathogens, causing significant decay in plant tissues, particularly in the root systems and the lower stems of woody plants and various agricultural crops.

The causal agents are specific fungi within the Trechisporales order. The disease type is primarily identified as root rot or white decay. The pathogen enters the host plant through wounds in the bark or damaged root tips, eventually spreading through the vascular system and degrading structural components like lignin, which compromises the plant's stability and nutrient uptake.

Host crops typically include perennial shrubs, orchards, and sometimes field crops grown in poorly drained soils. The disease is particularly problematic in nurseries where dense planting and high humidity create a favorable environment for fungal colonization and rapid transmission between neighboring plants.

Symptoms include the formation of white, crust-like mycelial mats on the roots or root collar. Infected plants show a decrease in vigor, yellowing leaves, and eventual wilting. As the decay progresses, the roots become soft and brittle, losing their ability to anchor the plant or absorb essential water and minerals from the soil profile.

Conditions favoring development include excessive soil moisture, compaction, and lack of oxygen in the root zone. The harm caused by this infection leads to reduced yields and plant mortality. Prevention involves improving soil drainage, practicing strict sanitation by removing infected plant debris, and applying systemic fungicides as a preventative measure to inhibit mycelial growth.
